Wednesday Hodgepodge: 2-3 September 2015

Okay, just a little late ...

The Wednesday Hodgepodge is courtesy of From This Side of The Pond.

1. What's on your September calendar? Anything fun?

A trip to Raleigh to learn about teaching using open-source software, the beginning of school for my kids, a ton of grading as my semester ends, and turning around and getting ready to start the next semester in October.   Oh, and my birthday ... I'm hoping there will be some fun in there, but that's harder for me to arrange. :)

2. You might be described as a natural born _____________________?

Musician.   Or, teacher.

3. September is National Courtesy Month...what one act of courtesy would you most like to see more of in your home, town, or the world at large?

An end to name-calling.   I see too much political discourse on social media (yes, I'm looking at you, Facebook) which degenerates into describing one's opponents with labels rather than discussing the issues.   (Seriously ... does calling your opponents "idiots" make them any more likely to listen to you?)

4. Eager beaver, chicken out, clam up, or let the cat out of the bag...of the phrases listed, which one have you related to most recently?

Eager beaver.   I'm a little too eager to engage with debate online lately ... it's starting to sour the way I react to things.

5. What's your movie theatre snack protocol? Do you chow down on snacks during the previews or wait until the movie begins? Do you buy snacks or refuse to pay those kind of prices? What's the last movie you saw in a theatre? How many thumbs up would you give it?

Sometimes we'll get snacks, especially when the kids are with us, but not so much lately.   It's not that I mind the prices (I've seen reports that the high prices really do help to keep the theaters in business) ... mostly, it's that I'm overweight.   I used to get a soda, but there's something about drinking a soda in a movie theater that leads to me having to leave the theater in the middle of the best part in order to empty my bladder ...

I think the latest movie I saw was "Spy".   Absolutely fantastic movie --- two thumbs way up.

6. Henry Ford is quoted as saying, "Nobody can think straight who does not work. Idleness warps the mind." Agree or disagree? Why?

Somewhere in the middle.   There is value to rest; I'm really not good at it, and it shows at times.   On the other hand, we were all created to have a purpose, and sitting around usually doesn't solve anything.

7. What's the last job you completed or task you performed where you had to 'work like a dog' until it was finished?

Finishing the last round of midterm grading.   Now, onto the current round ...

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

If your apology has the word "if" in it, then it's not an apology.
