Poetry Professor Causes Campus Shutdown

Actually, I should title the article "Paranoid Euro-Centric Student Causes Campus Shutdown", but the former title is more comical.

Unfortunately, it's really not all that funny.  In the name of security, we are training ourselves to look at our neighbors with suspicion, if not outright hatred.  Anyone who is different from us is automatically suspect ... and those of Middle Eastern descent appear to be the target du jour.

We have met the enemy ... and he is us.

Current Mood: contemplativecontemplative

That's really just sad... what on earth could be suspicious about *anyone* putting stacks of paper into a recycling bin?

Technically, that wasn't what happened ... he put a large, unmarked box next to a recycling bin. Which makes the paranoid reaction slightly more understandable ... but still paranoid.

Always the same...

My reading of history shows that German (Prussian) Americans had even more problems during WWI; general public paranoia, frequent government spying and investigation.

The bottom line is that we lost most (if not all) of our cultural heritage. Ultimately, this was a good thing because it totally Americanized my ancestors. (When was the last time you spoke to someone who told you that they were a Prussian-American? BTW, I'm not a 'WASP').

I'm sad that the public scrutiny will not help blend people with dark skin into our culture. Unlike my ancestors, they can't hide in plain sight.
