Well ... home PC was toast; had to re-image the drive back to manufacturer settings.  So it turns out that Jane's obsession with getting a copy of all the stuff on the hard drive was actually a good idea.

So, we've copied all the documents back.  Now, to spend the next two weeks re-downloading and installing everything we use on a regular basis.

Sigh.

If you've got the wherewithall, I would seriously recommend setting up a 10 gig operating system only partition, and putting everything else onto a second NTFS partition. You will be able to install most programs to the safe partition, and could then swap the OS out from underneath the programs. Registry keys may get blown away, but at least you'd be able to rescue your data.

See, I've had lousy luck with partitioning in the past ... inevitably, I end up picking the wrong size for the partition, and stuff ends up getting cross-installed, making the whole point of the partition useless. (And I can't figure out how to fix the partitioning after the fact.)

Once we get back to normal, I've got this 200GB USB drive, with automagic backup software for data stuff. If I'd actually gotten around to installing this thing, this whole thing would've been much easier. Guess I'll move that up the to-do list ...
